The interns share a funny moment in Manhattan.
Steve Schneider and the Shalom interns enjoy a baseball game.
The guys practice a song with Pastor Jason Walker (Bay Ridge Baptist Church) prior to leaving for the nursing home.
Dave greets the folks at the nursing home before the service.
Shalom interns minister in song with Pastor Jason Walker at the Brooklyn nursing home.
An Orthodox man rests on a ledge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Although he survived the Holocaust in Hungary, we pray that he will find Messiah's rest before it is too late. Craig Hartman, Shalom Ministries Director, instructs a group from Bethany Hills Baptist Church (Raleigh, NC) before leaving for Manhattan. John Schnur reasons from the Scriptures with a man who has other ideas about sin and salvation. In the Diamond District, 14-year-old Ethan Kennon (Bethany Hills Baptist Church) approaches an Orthodox Jewish man with a Shalom tract. Ethan displayed boldness and tenacity during his first foray into NYC street evangelism. Craig Hartman and Dave talk to a man in what turns out to be one of the best street interactions we've experienced all summer! (Midwood, Brooklyn)
Craig Hartman doesn't think Elijah is smiling enough, so he helps him! A street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, looks calm until believers try to witness for the Lord. A passerby tosses a crumpled Shalom tract into a garbage can in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We can't help think, If only he knew . . . Jerry Amato and his daughter, Amanda, witness on the streets of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Craig Hartman instructs the Bethany Hills Baptist Church group as we assemble in Boro Park, Brooklyn, the largest of the Orthodox communities in New York.
Craig Hartman instructs the interns during one of the many classes provided during the summer internship. David is great with directions and is always keeping us on track! A newspaper shows the Jews for Jesus summer campaign in New York City. Many rabbis teach
their congregations about how to respond to Christian workers. We often feel more tension on the street during this time.
The interns chat with Pastor Paul McCardle, pastor emeritus at All Nations Baptist Church of Woodhaven. Pastor McCardle has ministered in New York City for more than 50 years! Pastor (back row, white shirt) and Mrs. Yarborough (second row, far right, pink shirt) pose with the team from Bethany Hills Baptist Church (Raleigh, NC).
The interns pose for a picture with Pastor Dan Shafer, senior pastor at All Nations Baptist Church of Woodhaven, and
Pastor Paul McCardle.
This is a Jewish cemetery just outside of Boro Park, Brooklyn. It is a haunting reminder that life is but a vapor. The multitudes crowd the streets of midtown Manhattan. The interns spend time with Pastor Stephen Christopher (Memorial Baptist Church, Park Slope, Brooklyn). The interns experience door-to-door evangelism in Ozone Park, Queens.
Jonathan plays hymns for Pastor Tim Pledger (6th Avenue Baptist Church, Brooklyn). After this, we went door-knocking in some New York City housing projects to invite people to come to services at 6th Avenue Baptist. This crumpled Shalom Jewish tract that was tossed away in the garbage illustrates the unfortunate fate of many of the tracts given to the Orthodox. At Kosher Gym in Midwood, Brooklyn, we met an Orthodox man (shortly after this picture was taken) who told Jonathan that if we didn't get out of the area, he would "do to us what Hitler did to his grandfather." We didn't leave. Russian tracts, Jewish tracts, and Russian Jewish tracts are tossed out in the garbage in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Fortunately, many of our tracts were taken that day and read! The intern team (from left to right): Jonathan Gooch, Dave Barker, and Brian Graybill
Orthodox men cross a street in the Diamond District (Manhattan). Brian and Jonathan try to witness to an Orthodox Jewish man on the streets of
Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Dave does a little "babysitting" for Pastor Richmond (Assistant Pastor, Bethel Baptist Fellowship) before the start of the VBS that ran during the week ending June 30th. The guys prepare their dinner. Actually both Dave and Jonathan can cook! Brian just likes to eat (notice that he already has a full plate)!
Jonathan observes some Jewish Russian men playing chess in a park in Forest Hills, Queens. Before this picture was taken, an Orthodox woman threatened us if we didn't stop handing out tracts and talking to people. Nevertheless, we stood our ground and witnessed for the Lord.

Dave has one of the longest conversations with an Orthodox man this summer. This event occurred in the Diamond District (Manhattan). Dave was trying to show him that blood is needed for atonement (Lev. 17:11). St. Patrick's Cathedral (Midtown Manhattan) is the center for Catholic teaching in New York City. We contend with false religions and cults constantly as we try to reach the people with the true Gospel of peace.
